Digg and Top Sites

I'll be trying to expose you to all types of social and new media that you have possibly not engaged in before this semester. So, here we go.....  Answer the questions below in the comment section. Answer only for yourself after following the directions. You can read what others wrote above you in the comments, but I really want to know what you think and how you could apply it.

When Digg.com started in December 2004, it started as an index for all news published on the Web. It serves as an instantly updated digest of news where articles are published elsewhere online, then selected by readers to appear on its front pages. There have been many other websites that have tried a format similar to Digg to help people who want to stay informed and on top of everything.

Go to http://www.digg.com/ and check out the format and layout of the new and somewhat improved startup. Then go to the bottom of the page, and read the "about us" and "the blog" by those who made the changes just within the last month.

1) Do you think they made a good decision?
2) Do you believe this type of news service can benefit someone like you going into the news/sports/entertainment industry as you try to stay on the cutting edge of all things social media and current news?
3) Do you believe reporters use sources like this on a daily basis to provide you with current information?
4) Now go to http://www.alexa.com/topsites/countries;0/US and check out the top 25 websites in America. Pick one that is in the top 25 that you use fairly often. Find its global rank, U.S. rank, and its reputation. Write it down in the comments section, and then react to why you think its ranking is accurate, higher than you thought, or about right based on what you know about.

MC 400 Class February 5th

On the MC 400 wall on facebook, you will see the links where you should watch a short youtube video about the Viacom lawsuit against Google, then read the short blog and article from Fox News. Then start responding to the following questions. I'm having issues editing my own posts in the discussion section, and I'm anxious to see how this thread goes since the discussion is hanging up. With all the arguments laid out about the Viacom lawsuit, do you think there's anyway that a lawsuit like this will ever see the true light of day? Can you prevent what our book refers to as the goal of new new media--making worldwide content as accessible as book in hand?

Blogging Discussion

Questions:

1) What did you learn about your particular blog that you researched that you never realized before?

2) Could you tell from the opening page/first click or so/ what type of blog and who the writers were in a political, religious, entertainment sense? Is it obvious what their goal is?

3) When it comes to blogging, do you think it's better to write in the journalistic objective style or does it seem more effective when bloggers use their opinions?

4) Do you think bloggers have or should have the same first amendment protections as a traditional print, radio, or tv journalist?

5) Blogging has gotten really big when it comes to elections, do you put much credibility into what you read on the blogs you critiqued?

6) Do we still need old-media reporting in this new new media age?

Blog and Book Section Critiques

Please post your blog critique in one post with the title of what you critiqued at the top, and post your book section title in a separate post with the section title at the top.

Off-Camera or On-Camera

Lane Kiffin "off-camera" "on-camera debate"

Let me know what you think

Media 4.0 ---In Class Video on Convergence

Our discussion will start with these 7 questions. We will go down the numbers addressing them.
1) What do you feel is the right of a media relations spokesperson to set the terms for the media of what and when Lane Kiffin talks?

2) As a young reporter, do you think there is a difference in a media availability and a news conference?

3) In your opinion is there a difference in public vs. private issues anymore thanks in part to youtube, twitter, facebook, etc.?

4) You heard the word embargo and we discussed it in class, do you think there is and can still be such a thing as a company/organization giving an embargo to the media?

5) How did watching this off-camera/on-camera debate change your perspective on what happens behind the scenes between the media and a media relations/public relations person?

6) Do you think the blogs, comments on the blogs, or articles are more effective in understanding the true story of what happened? Which is more objective?

7) If you could give Bill Shory or Bud Ford your take as a young journalist on what happened, who would you say was right and what could have been done differently?
