Dear Mr. Carr
I read your story about CNN and agree with you....
One point that has been missed is what happened late Thursday and early Friday with the news networks ... when the MIT officer was shot I became curious and found a site that allowed me to listen to the Boston PD scanner ...good old fashion assignment desk scanner listening.... soon a patrol car was following a suspected carjacking and then a high speed chase which had the officer reporting hand grenades and explosions and automatic weapons being fired.... carjackers usually dont have hand grenades or automatic weapons....so it was fairly easy to reason that this might not be your normal every day crime happening... but either somebody at CNN ( and FOX and MSNBC ) was not monitoring the scanner or they had gotten reprimanded so badly they were afraid to report the explosions and gunfight from the scanner.... all we had on ALL 3 was news recorded from 2 hours earlier ? It was 45 minutes after the report of explosions when CNN finally switched on live reporting from the BBC ( or CNN International ?) that we finally had someone national covering it .... so the question I want answered is what is happening at those places overnight ??? .... I remember when they were staffed with someone at the assignment desk and in the anchor chair 24/7 .... but over the last 2-3 years I have found that is increasingly not the case and breaking news stories over night are not covered even in the crawl ???? Any chance you can do a story and get an answer about what ALL 3 do for overnight operations and why there have been cutbacks there ?
Thanks,
John Oldshue
